Lower Haight

Yesterday, on facebook, I posted a photo of a couple of buildings at the corner of Haight and Steiner with a caption that read:

Did I ever tell you about a friend whose family dates back to the Gold Rush? Her relations lived across the street from one another in SF and married. One was a Love, the other was a Haight. So, you see, Haight married Love and lived happily ever after! Love really does conquer all.

Well, that wasn't the end of the story! A couple of years ago, I was flying from San Francisco to Seattle. The wife of the couple sitting next to me on the plane asked if I wanted to play a Scrabble game with her. I agreed and we spent a delightful flight playing one game, perfect for the two hour flight from here to there while time flew by. We chatted away as we played and in due course I found out that she was a fifth generation Californian with roots in old San Francisco. With that knowledge I had to tell her the little story above to which she replied,

I too am a descendant of that couple! What's your friend's name?

So much for six degrees of separation.

Here's another photo on Haight.
